BRNDA Album of the Day and My Debut for Brilliant Corners
I promise that neither of my next pieces of music writing are about bands from DC!!! I somehow managed to write about music from other places!!!
Just a little bit of catch up, in case you missed it. I penned a review of the latest from BRNDA for Bandcamp a few weeks back. And to take you further into the origins of my love for dance punk from DC, today I am honored to be featured in the first issue of the first volume of the new music publication, Brilliant Corners, and excited to have a place to write things in the first person for a change!
It's a very personal essay on one of my favorite albums, the Black Eyes S/T. It's also about trauma and mental health, how abuse complicates desire, and how connecting our suffering to the suffering of others helps us feel less alone and more able to name our experiences and resist.
I am very tired and very busy working on two articles dropping soon, one a scene report on the diverse 90s Boston independent rock scene and one profiling the American Dreams label here in Chicago, so I will leave you with this for the time being!
