Sounds Coming Out of the Land #5: Boddie Recording Company
New episode of the radio show + new Mercury Retrograde Sanity Mixtape Series, tapes starting to arrive to earliest recipients...
Hello!
Life is just steamrolling me presently, so this is going to be another quick note. The latest episode of Sounds Coming Out of the Land is now available to be downloaded on the site. It’s also available to be streamed via Amsterdam’s Echobox Radio this Sunday, 10:00 Land Time and 16:00 ‘Dam Time, as always. This one is a deep dive into the Boddie Recording Company box set put out by Numero Group. Boddie was the first Black-owned recording studio in Cleveland and the longest running musical enterprise in the history of the city. It’s sick, to be honest!!! Check it out.
Mercury is officially in retrograde, so my car’s engine needs to be replaced, I locked myself out of the house with my dog before I even had coffee this morning (my morning is 4pm, because I work overnight now), things keep getting lost and found after I’ve already replaced them. Northeast Ohio has had two days of intense storms which caused all sorts of unusual pauses and delays. And I’m putting all of my chaotic emotions into mixtapes for people, working out my fall 2023 mixtape. It’s called “New Harm,” named after the Tara Jane O’Neil song that’s been haunting my mixtapes for a solid year and a half at this point.
The positive aspect to the engine issue is that it has forced a couple days off work—something I have not had since I started my current job on July 7th. I’m looking forward to making more tapes and finding a job that actually gives me days off with this tiny window of freedom, so I can focus on what I actually came to Cleveland to do.
I hope this finds you well, and if it doesn’t, I hope things improve for you swiftly.
